Empress Ki (Korean: 기황후 ; Hanja: 奇皇后 ; RR: Gi Hwanghu) is a South Korean historical drama television series starring Ha Ji-won as the titular Empress Ki.

A domestic and overseas hit, the series received the Gold Bird Prize for Serial Drama at the 9th Seoul International Drama Awards. Ha Ji-won also won the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards for her performance.

The series revolves around Ki Seung-nyang, a Goryeo-born woman who ascds to power despite the restrictions of the era's class system, and later marries Toghon Temür (emperor of the Yuan dynasty) to become a Yuan empress, instead of her first love, Wang Yoo. It managed to highlight the deep love the Emperor embedded in Lady Ki and depicts her loves and political ambitions.

Her mother gets killed wh the group tries to escape, but she manages to flee, growing up as a boy th man and becoming a great warrior. She is a great patriot of Goryeo and serves the country with her life, disguised as a man. Initially the fiancée of Wang Yoo, she is later forcibly tak to the Yuan court. She evtually becomes the wife of Ta Hwan, thus making her the Empress Consort of the Yuan dynasty, as which she greatly influces politics.

A noblewoman who was the first wife and Empress Consort of Ta Hwan but wh her crimes are revealed, is deposed from her throne and is executed in front of her people. Tanashiri serves as the main antagonist of the first chapter who plotted to kill Seung-nyang’s frids and poison anyone who dare to take her throne.

Despite its popularity, the series was criticized for its inclusion of fictional elemts regarding the characters and storyline. Much concern was raised over the series' depiction of the titular Empress Ki, who was portrayed as a brave warrior in the series. Historians were worried that the audice would overlook the fact that the real-life Empress Ki was responsible for attacking her native land.

Yoo gets embroiled in a conspiracy to kill Ta-hwan while the crown prince is exiled to Goryeo. He is deposed from Goryeo’s throne and exiled to Yuan. Unexpectedly, he meets Seung-nyang there with her true identity as a woman, working as Yuan’s palace maid. He protects her from harm and his feelings start to develop for her. Yoo helps Seung-nyang to return to the palace after she is ousted because of the evil scheming. He returns to Goryeo but soon finds out that Seung-nyang is now in stuck in between him and Ta-hwan.

Ta-hwan eventually returns to Yuan and ascends the throne, but his heart continues to feel sorry for her. He exercises great power due to his popularity among the court officials of Goryeo. He fosters good relationship with Yuan as a way to gain favour from the dynasty in order to promote himself as a suitable king of Goryeo. His greed for the power never stop and he never give up to seize the throne from Wang Yoo.

However, she feels bad when Ta-hwan doesn’t love her. As the primary empress, she is expected to give birth to the successor of the throne.
